If you and your gaming group have been looking for free board games to play then look no further. It is time to step out of your comfort zone and play a tabletop role-playing game. There are hundreds of reasons to get into the tabletop experience and I will shine a light on a few of the biggest. Those of you who grew up pretending to be a pirate, a police officer, or perhaps even a dinosaur should definitely try out a tabletop role-playing game. Roleplaying games are the ultimate free board games. They are not technically board games, but have many board game like elements.

Games like "Dungeons and Dragons" or "GURPS" serve as a rule set for adults to play pretend. Tabletop role-playing has been around for a long time and it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Essentially, a tabletop game is a story-telling game that allows its players to do whatever they wish. In most games, one player is the "Game Master" or "Dungeon Master" and he/she acts as the storyteller and referee. The other players choose what actions they wish to take and the Game Master has them roll dice and add ability scores(in most cases) to calculate if they succeed or fail in these actions.

You and your friends are sailing the treacherous seas only to be boarded by a crew of pirates. You draw your pistol and fire at a pirate on the boarding plank. You roll your dice high and the "Game Master" exclaims to you that you have successfully hit the pirate, he tumbles off the ship! One of your friends draws his cutlass and crouches into the battle successfully sneaking up on another pirate. Your final friend pulls a Jack Sparrow as he slices the rope of the sail and goes flying onto the enemy ship. Need more? Vin Diesel plays tabletop games. End of argument.

Some of you are experienced with video game RPGs and could spend hours creating your character exactly how you want them. Others may just want to jump straight into the action. This is where table top games surpass those of any video game or board game. You have the ability to flesh out your character exactly how you want, everything from appearance, to stats, abilities, and skills. If you aren't as creative as your fellow gamer, there are hundreds of characters that others have already made for you to choose from.

Dungeons and Dragons are not the only game to choose from, there are literally thousands of tabletop games to explore. Some with rule books so big they have to divide it into several, others not more than a page long. Many of these games are free and you can even download a free "light rules" version of some of the big-bads, like DnD or even Pathfinder. There are games on horror, fantasy, sci-fi, realistic, etc. I suggest checking out a website called www.drivethrurpg.com for many free and paid games. I just gave you unlimited game time for literally any setting you can think of, and it's all free, but you are welcome to buy supplements or more in depth rules if you and your gamer friends feel necessary in the future. What are you waiting for?
